  1. Opening

President, Faye Harrison, opened the meeting as the chair.

  2. IUAES finances and membership

Treasurer, Mugsy Spiegel, presented the financial report of the IUAES. The Treasurer assumed his position in October 2010 at Inter-Congress in Antalya when the previous IUAES bank account in the US was closed and the balance approached to zero. A new bank account was opened in the UK by the Treasurer's effort and the balance was £3569.07 in 2011, £45869.94 in 2012, £56774.66 in 2013 and £62850.22 in May 2014 but the Treasurer reported that the balance was anticipated soon to be reduced to £37150.22. It was also reported the IUAES lost one thousand members from 2013 to 2014. Important questions were addressed concerning the turnout at future Inter-Congresses, the need to increase IUAES members, the need to pay subscription fees to UNESCO based organizations and the subsidized secretariat administration costs. It was pointed out that a "business plan" for the next 3-5 years is necessary for allocation of funds, and we first need to have a strategic plan onto which to overlay a financial plan.

  3. Honorary Members

Secretary-General, Junji Koizumi, reported that Buddhadeb Chaudhuri, John (Jack) Rankine Goody and Sherry Beth Ortner were selected as Honorary Members in 2013 and they were notified accordingly. It was also reported that the webpage on Honorary Members was renewed (http://www.iuaes.org/hon_members.html) and the names of Posthumous/Deceased Honorary Members were added based on past records and additional research.

  4. Report on the IUAES 2014 with JASCA in Chiba

Junji Koizumi, the organizer of the IUAES 2014 with JASCA, reported on the Inter-Congress which was being held. It was reported that the Inter-Congress 2014 was going to open as planned with the cooperation of JASCA (Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology), local governments of Chiba and a number of funding agencies and other organizations in Japan as well as of WCAA and other international and domestic anthropological associations. It was also reported that financial outcome of the Inter-Congress was very uncertain and the organizer might run into debt, and in any case there was no possibility for this Inter-Congress to make a surplus because the amount corresponding to that surplus must have been subtracted from the amount approved by the local governments as subsidies for this Inter-Congress.

  5. Report on the preparation for World Congress 2018

Miriam Pillar Grossi, the organizer of the World Congress 2018, made a progress report. The World Congress is going to be held in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil and it will be hosted by Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA). 2. Report on IUAES Commissions

The Head of the Council of Commissions, Giuliana Prato, together with Secretary-General, reported on the meeting of the Council of Commissions held at 19:30-21:00 on May 15, 2014:

In the meeting of the Council of Commissions on May 15, Treasurer reported that the total reconstruction of IUAES finances started in 2010 and the balance recovered to about £37000 ; Even with subsidies from outside, the IUAES finances were still fragile and it was difficult to provide support for Commission activities; We first need to build up our funds before redistribution, and we need a long-term strategy; IUAES Commissions should be the intellectual heart of the IUAES; Commission should receive on-line visibility and social media is necessary as well as a mailing list for Commissions; We need to create benefits for IUAES members and this should be collective and collaborative work; Publications, particularly an on-line journal, can be an important benefit for the members; Being a member of UNESCO organizations and maintaining our global presence can be an intangible but important benefit for members; Above all, we need to increase our members.

  3. On the Commission web page

Following the discussion at the meeting of the Council of Commissions, the Executive Committee discussed how it could provide support for Commission activities. The IUAES lacked the financial strength to provide such support and no conclusion was reached, but it was agreed that the homepage, mailing list and social media were important for this purpose.

  4. On the IUAES Membership with ISSC and ICSU

The Executive Committee discussed our membership with ISSC (International Social Science Council) and ICSU (International Council for Science) as well as with CIPSH (International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences), particularly the significance of our multiple membership and the benefits we receive from these UNESCO based organizations. It was agreed that we need to gather more information and to carefully watch the process, maintaining an observer status when possible.

  5. Other Issues:
    • Administration of Inter-Congresses

Necessity and possibility of using a PCO (Professional Congress Organizer) for organizing congresses was discussed. It was pointed out that a PCO would be needed for holding congresses but the cost involved could be considerable. The need for the fund to cover the initial cost for holding an Inter-Congress was also noted, but no conclusion was reached. It was agreed that Zhang Jijiao and Subhadra Channa should be the members of the international advisory board for Inter-Congress 2015 in Bangkok.

    • Relations with the WCAA

A review discussion was held on the joint meetings of IUAES and WCAA held on May 16 and May 18, 2014. It was agreed that Junji Koizumi, Thomas Reuter, Rajko Mursic and Mugsy Spiegel will be the members of the ad hoc committee to negotiate for a possible alliance between IUAES and WCAA.
